The World Bio-Fuel Day was observed across the world on August 10, 2018 with an aim to create awareness about non fossil-fuels (green fuels). The day highlights the importance of non-fossil fuels as alternative to conventional fossil fuels and highlights the various efforts made by the Government in the bio-fuel sector.

2. (a) Ministry of Commerce
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu on August 8, 2018 launched the ‘Niryat Mitra’ mobile App in New Delhi. The app has been developed by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), the largest exporters’ organisation of the country

Colombia's President-elect Ivan Duque has been sworn in as the country's 60th president. Duque, a 42-year-old former senator, defeated left-leaning candidate Gustavo Petro in a presidential runoff in June with 54 percent of the vote.

The National Handloom Day is being observed every year on 7 August in India to honour the handloom weavers in the country and also carter an impetus to India’s handloom industry. The date August 7 commemorates the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on this date in 1905 in the Calcutta Town hall to protest against partition of Bengal by the British Government.

6. (a) Andhra Pradesh
The world’s first-ever facility to create thermal batteries was inaugurated in Andhra Pradesh by the state’s Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Amaravati. The thermal battery plant, which is manufactured by the Bharat Energy Storage Technology Private Limited (BEST), is expected to start commercial operations by May 2019.

The 76th anniversary of Quit India movement was observed across India on August 8, 2018. On this day in 1942, father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi gave the famous clarion call of ‘Do or Die’ to all Indians to drive the British away from the country.

JDU’s Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected as the new deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha on August 9, 2018. The NDA candidate was pitted against BK Hari Prasad, the joint candidate of the Congress-led Opposition in the vote. Singh won the vote with 125 votes in favour and 105 against.

The United Nations on August 8, 2018 announced that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has chosen former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet to be the UN’s new human rights chief. She was the first woman in her country to occupy the top position and is known to be a strong advocate for women’s rights.

The 11th edition of Global Innovation Index (GII) 2018 was launched in India on August 8, 2018. The index was based on the theme– ‘Energizing the World with Innovation’. In this year’s edition of GII, India’s rank has jumped to 57 from 60 in 2017. In fact, India has been consistently climbing the GII ranking for the past three years.

The 2018 GII index shows interesting changes in the top 10. While Switzerland leads the rankings for the eighth consecutive year, the Netherlands and Sweden swapped their positions, ranking 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Former Union Minister and Senior Congress leader R K Dhawan passed away in New Delhi on August 6, 2018 evening. He was 81. Dhawan was a former personal secretary to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
