Answers with Explanation

1. (b) Bajrang Punia


The 18th edition of Asian Games began in Jakarta, Indonesia on August 18. Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia snatched the spotlight on the Day 1 of the 18th Asian Games by opening India’s gold medal account. Punia won his maiden Asian Games gold in the 65kg category by defeating Japan's Takatani Daichi 10-8 in an exciting final bout.

2. (b) Kofi Annan

Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General passed away on August 18 after a short illness. He was 88. He was the only African to helm the post of UN Chief. He served for two terms from 1997 to 2006. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for his humanitarian work.

3. (a) B Sesikeran

The FSSAI constituted a group of experts from health and nutrition sector to look into the issue of labelling. The expert panel will be headed by B Sesikeran, former director of National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) and comprises Hemalatha and doctor Nikhil Tandon.

Indigenously developed Helicopter launched Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’ was on August 19, 2018 successfully flight tested from Army Helicopter in the ranges of Pokhran. The test was conducted by the DRDO and the Indian Army.

The World Humanitarian Day was observed across the world on August 19, 2018 to pay tribute to workers who risk their lives in humanitarian services and to gather support for people affected by crises around the world.

The multi-purpose Barak 8 missile defence system, jointly developed by India and Israel, will be procured by the Israeli Navy to protect its economic zones and strategic facilities from diversified threats.

The International Conference on Recent Advances in Food Processing Technology (iCRAFPT) started at Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT), Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu with theme “Doubling farmers’ income through food processing”.

Rajasthan government declared that the state will observe September as the "month of nutrition" to create awareness among people living in the state. Students of Class 1 to 8 of government schools will be given milk daily instead of thrice a week.

Around 180 families, who were torn apart by the 1950-53 Korean War, will be temporarily reunited in North Korea starting from August 20, 2018. The reunions, the first in three years, will take place in the North’s tourist resort on Mount Kumgang.

The 18th edition of Asian Games began in Jakarta, Indonesia on August 18. The games will take place simultaneously in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia and Palembang, capital of the province of South Sumatra, so as to accommodate all branches of sports.

The 11th World Hindi Conference was inaugurated in Mauritius on August 18 with the theme ‘Hindi World and Indian Culture’. The three-day conference aims at expanding the reach of the Hindi language at a global level.

Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General passed away on August 18, 2018 after a short illness. He was 88. In February 2012, Annan was appointed as the UN–Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria, to help find a resolution to the ongoing conflict there. In September 2016, Annan was appointed to lead a UN commission to investigate Myanmar's Rohingya crisis.
