TRAI’s Decision Brought Relief from Telemarketers

TRAI to impose penalties on erring telemarketing companies.

Telecom Regulator, TRAI on 1 December 2010 decided to impose penalties upto Rs 2.5 lakh on erring telemarketing companies. Consumers who want to activate the Do-Not Call (DNC) service or file a complaint against a telemarketer will simply have to dial 1901,a toll-free number. Commercial communication has been barred between 9.00 pm and 9.00 am. The previous regulations in this respect had only provided for Do Not Call Registry. The VAS industry will suffer loss in business volume. The decision will also prove to be cause of concern for BPOs that provide telemarketing services on their client’s behalf.
