US President-elect Donald Trump has started the process of formation of government for his next innings as the President of the USA. He has named Florida Representative Mike Waltz as his new national security advisor (NSA). This decision can be seen as an indication of the USA's tough stance against China.
Mike Waltz is a veteran Army Green Beret with a wealth of knowledge on US military operations and policy. He has always made a point of criticizing China and promoting US strategic readiness in the Indo-Pacific area.
Waltz’s Tough Stance Against China
The choice of Waltz demonstrates the Trump administration's resolve to confront what he refers to as "the greater threat" presented by the Chinese Communist Party. A boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing by the United States was demanded by Waltz because to the origin of COVID-19 and its treatment of Uighurs.
Waltz's appointment coincides with already tense US-China relations that have been made worse by previous economic disputes, military posture in the South China Sea, and ideological disputes.
Shift of Focus Towards Indo-Pacific
Before the election, Waltz and veteran Pentagon strategist Matthew Kroenig co-authored an essay in the Economist arguing that America should refocus its strategic attention from Europe and the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific. They wrote, "The next president should take immediate action to resolve the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East quickly and finally direct strategic attention where it belongs: thwarting the Communist Party's greater threat."
Positive Impact on Indo-US Relations
Waltz’s rise to a key position in Trump’s administration indicates a stronger stance on China, highlighting the growing importance of Indo-US relations. India, with its own challenges with China, may see this strategic focus as a positive match.
American foreign policy will be shaped in the upcoming months, and Waltz will be key in developing plans that strengthen military prowess in the Indo-Pacific.
