University Grants Commission on March 20, 2018 made a historic move by granting autonomy to 60 higher educational institutions that have maintained high academic standards.
The information was shared by the Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar who said that the Union Government is striving to introduce a liberalised regime in the education sector with special emphasis on linking autonomy with quality.
The 60 higher educational institutions that have been granted autonomy include 5 central universities, 21 state universities, 24 deemed universities and 2 private universities and 8 autonomous colleges.
Some of the names include renowned institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, NALSAR, National Law University Delhi, Anna University, Symbiosis International and Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
Significance
• Though the universities will remain within the ambit of UGC, they will have the freedom to start new courses, off campus centres, skill development courses, research parks and any other new academic programs.
• The universities will also have the freedom to hire foreign faculty, enrol foreign students, give incentive based emoluments to the faculty, enter into academic collaborations and run open distance learning programmes.
• The eight autonomous collages will be free to set their own syllabus, hold examinations, carry out evaluation as well as declare results. Only the degree will be awarded by the respective university.
Besides this, the Ministry will be giving a show cause notice to three deemed universities that are lacking in quality.
