Union Government approved Shimla drinking water project for World Bank funding

The project would help the people of Shimla and adjoining Special Planning Area of chronic water shortage problem and also sewerage connectivity.

The Union Government on 29 June 2015 approved 643 crore rupees drinking water and sewerage project for Shimla town for World Bank funding. Under the project, World Bank will provide a loan of 514 crore rupees and remaining 129 crore rupees will be provided by the state government as counterpart funding over a project period of three years.

The project would help the people of Shimla and adjoining Special Planning Area in addressing the chronic water shortage problem and also sewerage connectivity.

The project approved by the Union Finance Ministry during a meet in New Delhi would have three components and they are
• Augmentation of water supply of Shimla town by lifting water from Kol Dam reservoir
• Rehabilitation of water supply distribution system
• Rejuvenation of sewerage network

Shimla’s drinking water supply augmentation scheme envisages lifting of water from Kol Dam project near Tattapani to cater to the needs of the fast growing town for next three decades. The water distribution system would also be improved and strengthened to plug leakages and avoid wastage.

Under the sewerage project, the sanitary conditions of the town would be improved by providing sewerage facility to all households, new sewerage treatment plants will be constructed and existing treatment plants will be improved and sewerage lines will be rejuvenated.
