Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently successfully test fired the air-to-surface RudraM-II missile from Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30 MK-I platform off the coast of Odisha. Rudra M-II is an indigenously developed solid fuel based air-launched missile system.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has recently announced the hosts of the 2026 and 2029 Women's Asian Cup. This tournament will be hosted by Australia in the year 2026 and by Uzbekistan in the year 2029. This was announced by the AFC Executive Committee at a meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Recently, mountaineer Jyoti Ratre has become the oldest Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest. 55-year-old Ratre is a resident of Madhya Pradesh. Earlier, on May 19, 2018, 53-year-old Sangeeta Bahl became the 'oldest Indian woman to climb Mount Everest'. This was Ratre's second attempt to climb the world's highest peak. In the year 2023, he had to return from 8,160 meters due to bad weather.

  1. (a) Srinivas R. Kulkarni

For his outstanding contributions in the field of astronomy, Indian-origin professor Srinivas R. Kulkarni has been awarded the prestigious Shaw Prize in Astronomy for 2024. Currently he is working as a professor at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He completed his Ph.D. He did his M.A. from the University of California in 1983. Shaw Prize is an important award given in the field of astronomy.

The Vietnamese Parliament has recently elected General To Lam as the new President of the country. He was elected by Vietnam's Parliament—the National Assembly—for a term until 2026. Vietnam has a single party (Communist Party of Vietnam) system of rule. Vietnam is a South East Asian country.

Cyclone Remal that has arisen in the Bay of Bengal is the first pre-monsoon tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. The name Ramal, means 'sand' in Arabic. The name was chosen by Oman, as per the standard convention for naming tropical cyclones.  

  1. (c) Telangana

The Telangana government has banned the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of gutkha and pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine across the state. This ban will continue for a period of one year starting from May 24, 2024. Let us tell you that this step has been taken keeping in mind the serious health risks associated with the consumption of gutkha and pan masala.

Recently, the International Conference on Nuclear Security was organized in Vienna under the auspices of the IAEA (ICONS-2024) under the co-chairmanship of Kazakhstan and Australia. The heads of ministries of foreign affairs, energy, internal affairs and other related departments of 130 countries participated in the current conference.

  1. (b) IOCL

The Indian Army has signed an agreement with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to conduct trials of hydrogen fuel cell bus technology for green and sustainable transportation solutions. This is another step of the Indian Army towards its commitment towards innovation and environmental management. A hydrogen fuel cell bus was also handed over to the Indian Army during the event.

  1. (a) Dr. Sameer V Kamat

The Central Government has appointed the Chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Dr. Sameer V Kamat's tenure has been extended for another year. As per the government order, Dr. Kamat will remain in his current position as DRDO chief till May 31, 2025. Kamat was appointed to the top post in DRDO in August 2022 and was due to retire on May 31, 2024.
