11 July 2012: World Population Day

World Population Day was celebrated on 11 July 2012. It aims to make aware people about the increasing population in the country. It includes the harmful effects of early marriage and early child birth. The main theme of the year 2012 was Universal Access to Reproductive Health Services.

According to the census of 2011, the population of India over the last ten years increased to 1.21 billion. Health Services is one of the major target by United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) till 2015. They had started several programmes to educate people about the different methods of family Planning.

UNPF conducted a programme in Egypt where they had shown a documentary on the nurse-cum-midwife who serves poor and isolated clients and contributes to saving lives every day in Minya.

Many states in India had celebrated this day so as to make aware people about harmful effects of increasing population. Delhi celebrated World Population Day with the 20 thousand people who had participated in walkathon. The walkathon was organized by the Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh (JSK). Kanpur celebrated this day with a rally to make aware people about the disadvantages of bigger families. National Cadet Corps took rally from Phool Bagh with banners and posters.

This day was first celebrated in the year 1987. This day gained popularity with support from different national organizations and common people around the world.
