Wrestler Prem Nath passed away

Prem Nath, a President’s Medal-winning retired Delhi Police official, was known for his efforts to popularise wrestling in Delhi.

Wrestler Prem Nath, a gold medallist at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games, passed away on 1 June 2015. He was 64. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Prem Nath, a President’s Medal-winning retired Delhi Police official, was known for his efforts to popularise wrestling in Delhi.

In 1976, he took over an akhara established by Guru Baijnath in the Kamla Nagar area of New Delhi. Today, the akhara is known as the Guru Prem Nath akhara.

In 1974, he bagged the 57kg Commonwealth Games title in New Zealand. He got the Arjuna Award for the year 1972.
