The election results have given a clear mandate, and the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) is all set for a third term by emerging victorious in the Assam Election 2026, securing 102 seats in the 126-member assembly. The alliance includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodo People's Front (BPF). This combination successfully countered the challenge from the Congress-led Asom Sonmilito Morcha. The opposition alliance failed to make significant gains despite a high-energy campaign by Gaurav Gogoi.

What does the district-wise results map show?

The district-wise results show that the NEDA dominated Upper Assam and Central Assam districts. The BJP maintained its grip on the tea garden belts and urban centers like Guwahati. In Lower Assam, the AIUDF faced stiff competition from the Congress, leading to a split in the minority vote. The Barak Valley regions showed a mixed result with both BJP and Congress winning key constituencies.

How Assam's 126 Seats Are Split Across Regions

Assam's 126 assembly seats fall across 35 districts. For election analysis, these districts are grouped into five regions: Upper Assam, Central and North Assam, Lower Assam, Barak Valley, and the Bodoland Territorial Area. Each region has its own mix of voters, communities, and political loyalties. Geography and the makeup of the local population matter greatly in Assam politics, and the state is split into regions that vote very differently from each other. Understanding this regional split is the key to reading the full election map.

Upper Assam (35 Seats): BJP's Strongest Belt

Upper Assam covers districts like Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Dhemaji. This is the BJP's most reliable region in the state.

In 2021, the BJP alliance dominated Upper Assam, winning almost all seats in districts such as Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and Golaghat. The pattern has held since 2016 and shows no sign of changing in 2026.

Exit polls for 2026 project the BJP-led alliance to win 21 to 22 seats in Upper Assam, while the Congress-led alliance is expected to win only 3 to 5 seats. The one seat to watch in this belt is Sivasagar, where Akhil Gogoi of Raijor Dal is defending his 2021 win against both BJP and AGP candidates.

Central and North Assam (41 Seats): NDA's Wide Lead Holds

This belt covers Guwahati and the districts around it, including Nagaon, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Darrang, Kamrup, and Nalbari. It is the largest region by seat count and holds several high-profile contests.

Exit polls project the BJP-led alliance to win 28 to 30 seats in North and Central Assam, with the Congress-led alliance projected to win only 6 to 8 seats. The Axis My India exit poll puts the NDA even higher, projecting 31 to 35 seats for the NDA in Central Assam alone.

The Jalukbari, Guwahati Central, and Dispur seats are the most watched contests in this region. All three feature well-known candidates from both sides and their results will be declared early in the counting process.

Lower Assam (22 Seats): Congress's Best Hope

Lower Assam covers districts like Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, and the rural parts of Kamrup. This is the only region where the Congress-led alliance holds a projected lead in 2026.

In 2021, Lower Assam almost exclusively voted for the Congress and AIUDF alliance, which did well among minority voters in this belt. In the 2021 region-wise count, the opposition won 29 seats in this belt with a vote share of 45.64%, against the NDA's 40.57%.

For 2026, the picture has changed slightly. The Congress and AIUDF are no longer together. Axis My India projects the NDA at 8 to 10 seats and Congress at 12 to 14 seats in Lower Assam, making it the only region where the Congress side holds the edge. However, that lead is smaller than it was in 2021, which points to some voter movement toward the BJP even in this belt.

Barak Valley (13 Seats): BJP Gains Ground in Bengali-Speaking Belt

Barak Valley sits in the southern part of Assam and includes the districts of Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj. Most voters here speak Bengali, and the region has distinct political patterns compared to the rest of the state.

In 2021, the BJP alliance won 11 of the 20 seats in Barak Valley with a vote share of 47.04%. The BJP has been growing steadily in this region over the last two election cycles.

For 2026, the BJP is expected to sweep most seats in Barak Valley, continuing its rise in this Bengali-speaking region. The Matrize exit poll projects the BJP-led alliance to win 9 to 10 seats in Barak Valley, with the Congress-led alliance taking 3 to 4 seats.

Bodoland Territorial Area (15 Seats): Alliance Shifts Change the Map

The Bodoland Territorial Area covers the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, and Udalguri. This region has been shaped by shifting alliances between BJP, BPF, and UPPL over the last two elections.

In 2016, the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) was a BJP ally. In 2021, it switched to the Congress side. Then in March 2026, the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) broke away from the NDA over seat-sharing disputes. Despite these shifts, exit polls still project the NDA to dominate this belt.

The Axis My India exit poll projects the NDA at 13 to 15 seats in Bodoland, with Congress+ at 0 to 2 seats. The Matrize exit poll also projects the BJP-led alliance at 12 to 13 seats in Bodoland, with the Congress-led alliance unlikely to win any seat here.

Who are the key winners in the 2026 polls?

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emerged as the biggest winner, securing a massive victory over Bidisha Neog in Jalukbari, as per the latest update he won by 127151 votes. Gaurav Gogoi of the Indian National Congress lost the Jorhat seat to Hitendra Nath Goswami of BJP.

What were the main factors behind the result?

The success of the BJP is attributed to its welfare schemes and infrastructure development. The "Orunodoi" scheme remained a popular factor among women voters. The historic female voter turnout of 86.5 percent played a crucial role in the NDA's performance. Strategic seat-sharing with the BPF also helped the ruling party in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
