Fisheries sector has been recognized as an authoritative employment and income generator and play a significant part in rural economy and is a foundation of nutritious and cheap food. Around 2.50 lakh fishermen in Chhattisgarh depend on aquaculture and fisheries for their livelihood. Fisheries segment occupies a vital place in the socio - economic development of Chhattisgarh. It furnishes principally to the need of socio - economically backward and weaker communities of fishermen, scheduled tribes and scheduled castes. Fish is easily edible and protein - rich nutritive food product that helps to confiscate malnutrition.

Chhattisgarh possesses varied and vast natural water area accessible for fish availability in the form of reservoirs, river, tanks and ponds. In rivers, fishing is free for the members of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

Fish seed production resources
Fish seed is an imperative input in the fish culture. Necessity of fish seed in terms of customary fry is 610 million per annum. A well organized fish seed deal also subsist which aid in meeting above 19 percent of the total constraint outside the State.
Chhattisgarh Government has encouraged constructing small ponds on private land as per Draught relief program. It is anticipated that this supplementary water area will demonstrate a bonus to fish seed rearing & fish culture program. Contributions are being made to set up more circular hatcheries in private and public sector to pull up all the accessible resources of inventions that created novel facilities for rearing and production both in the coming years.
New Fisheries Policy in Chhattisgarh
• Fishery leases of tanks, irrigation reservoirs and ponds upto 200 ha. of water area to be given for 5 years at a time.
• 10 percent increase in preliminary lease amount in every 3rd year is to be made
• Tanks and Ponds having more than 1 ha. water area are to be rented out to the registered fishermen's co - operative societies
• Fisheries of 10 percent of tanks, irrigation reservoirs, ponds are to be reserved for renting to the unemployed youth who have been granted training by the department for ten months
• Working authority of registered co - operative society will be in the radius of 8 kilometers from its headquarters
• Fish Seed traders are accountable to take licenses under the Fish Seed Act
