February 29th, 2024, marks the occurrence of an unusual event: Leap Day. This extra day is inserted into the calendar every four years and helps keep our calendar year synchronised with the Earth's revolution around the sun.

Google also marked the rare occurrence of Leap Day with a special and vibrant doodle. This year's design features a cheerful frog, adorned with the date "February 29th," playfully leaping across a serene pond backdrop.

Google Doodle mentions: “Ribbiting news, it's Leap Day! Leap Day, February 29th, only occurs about every four years, to keep our calendars in alignment with the Earth and sun.”

This is not the first time Google has used its iconic doodles to celebrate Leap Day. Each leap year, the search engine giant comes up with creative and often humorous ways to mark this special occasion, highlighting its significance and engaging users in a fun way.

Google also celebrates this day by sharing interesting facts about Google Doodle. For instance, the inaugural Doodle was introduced in 1998, and the initial animated Doodle made its debut on Halloween in the year 2000.

How to Celebrate the Leap Day?

While not an official holiday, Leap Day has fostered unique traditions around the world.

Born on the cusp of time: Individuals born on February 29th, affectionately called "leaplings," experience a rare birthday phenomenon. Some cultures even consider them lucky! If you know anyone born on February 29th, throw them a special birthday bash or connect them with other leaplings for a unique shared experience.

History.com mentions: “People born on Leap Day are called 'Leaplings'. There are only about 5 million people in the whole world who were born on February 29, with the odds of being born on Leap Day standing at about 1-in-1,461.”

Plan a "leap year" themed party: Decorate with leap year colours like green and yellow, or plan activities related to the number four.

Plan a mini-adventure: Take a day trip to a nearby town you haven't visited before, embark on a scenic hike, or visit a museum you've been meaning to see.
