Hyderabad has been a joint capital of two states, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, since years, but not anymore. Starting Sunday, the city will no longer be called a capital of Andhra Pradesh, as said by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014.
Yes, Hyderabad will only be serving the state of Telangana as its capital. It was in the year 2014 when Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated in two states- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It was then that Hyderabad was designated as the capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for a long period of 10 years.
The AP Reorganization Act said that on and from June 2, 2014, the city of Hyderabad shall be deemed as the common capital of the State of Andhra Pradesh and the State of Telangana for a period of ten years. It further said that post the expiry of this period of ten years, Hyderabad shall be seen as the capital of the State of Telangana. It further said that for the state of Andhra Pradesh, there shall be a new capital post this period of ten years.
It was on June 2, 2014 that the State of Telangana's formation on huge demand came after the approval of the AP Reorganization bill in February 2014 in the Parliament.
A Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister of Telangana, instructed the officials of the state to reclaim the buildings that were allotted to the state of Andhra Pradesh for the period of 10 years, after June 2. Such buildings include the Lake View government guest house in Hyderabad.
The ten years of separation was not completely smooth, and there were many matters that still persisted between the states. Division of assets was one such matter.
The government of Telangana wished to address the bifurcation by means of a cabinet meeting. However, the meeting got postponed, all because the Election Commission withheld the approval.
A day-long event had been organized for Sunday.
