From 610 kg to 63 kg: Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari's Incredible Weight Loss Journey

Born on February 28, 1991, Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari is a Saudi Arabian man. At 610 kg (1,345 lbs), he was declared the heaviest living person in August 2013, attracting global attention. He was the second-heaviest person in recorded history, behind Jon Brower Minnoch. At that point, Khalid's excessive obesity—a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 204—had left him bedridden for more than three years.

Khalid's condition grew to the point that he had to rely only on friends and relatives for necessities. King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia intervened on behalf of Khalid due to his condition and directed him to be treated in Riyadh. Because of his girth, a team of thirty medical specialists used a forklift to move him to King Fahd Medical City as part of this complete weight-loss treatment.

Journey to Loss Weight

Khalid followed a stringent routine under medical supervision, which included a customized diet and training program in addition to a gastric bypass procedure. Amazingly, he reduced approximately 320 kg (710 lbs) in six months, more than half of his body weight. He shed 542 kg (1,195 lbs) in total by November 2017, bringing his weight down to 63.5 kg (140 lbs) by 2023. This dramatic transformation allowed him to regain mobility, and he was able to walk for the first time in five years with assistance.

Post-Weight Loss

Following his significant weight loss, Khalid underwent multiple surgeries to remove excess skin, a common issue for individuals who have lost substantial amounts of weight. His journey has been described as inspirational, and he has earned the affectionate nickname "The Smiling Man" from the medical staff who assisted him during his treatment.

Royal Intervention and Medical Treatment

In August 2013, when Khalid weighed 610 kg (1,345 lbs), King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia ordered him to undergo treatment in Riyadh. A team of 30 medical professionals was assembled to oversee his treatment, which included:

  • Gastric bypass surgery
  • Strict diet and exercise regimen tailored to his needs
  • Intensive physiotherapy sessions to regain mobility

Within just six months of starting the treatment, Khalid lost more than half of his body weight, shedding over 320 kg (710 lbs). By November 2017, he had lost a total of 542 kg, bringing his weight down to 68 kg (150 lbs).

Excess Skin Removal

As a result of his dramatic weight loss, Khalid required multiple surgeries to remove excess skin that had accumulated. In January 2018, he had the last of these procedures.

Khalid's journey has been described as inspirational, and he has earned the nickname "The Smiling Man" from the medical staff who assisted him. His story highlights the potential for recovery and transformation, even in cases of extreme obesity.
