International Friendship Day is a special commemoration that transcends borders, countries, and backgrounds to celebrate the bond of friendship. This wonderful day will be commemorated on July 30th, 2024, as it has been every year since the United Nations established it.

The foundation of human connection is friendship. Mutual respect, trust, support, and shared experiences form the cornerstone of this connection. This day provides a platform to:

  • Praise Your Friends: Take time to acknowledge and thank your friends.
  • Strengthening Bonds: Boost bonds by taking part in activities that make your friendships stronger.
  • Foster Unity: Respect one another's differences and work towards world peace.

What is the History of International Friendship Day?

Although the idea of celebrating friendship dates back many centuries, International Friendship Day is only recently officially recognized. In 2011 the UN General Assembly declared July 30 to be International Friendship Day.

The UN Mentions: “The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. The resolution places emphasis on involving young people, as future leaders, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity.”

What is the Significance of International Friendship Day?

Here is why International Friendship Day is significant:

  • Encourage Peace and Harmony: International Friendship Day fosters friendships between people from different backgrounds, countries, and cultures.
  • Emphasise the value of human connection: Since humans are known as social beings, friendships can boost general wellbeing, reduce loneliness, and offer emotional support. Encouragement of Community Engagement: This day provides an opportunity for people to come together and participate in different activities that promote friendship, solidarity, and understanding
  • Honour variety: This day celebrates the diversity of the world's cultures and viewpoints as well as the depth of human ties.
  • Empower youth: By putting young people in friendship-building activities, the day fosters the development of future leaders who are dedicated to world peace and citizenship.

The UN mentions: “Through friendship — by accumulating bonds of camaraderie and developing strong ties of trust — we can contribute to the fundamental shifts that are urgently needed to achieve lasting stability, weave a safety net that will protect us all, and generate passion for a better world where all are united for the greater good.”

Two Dates, One Celebration
