Mar Galcerán, a member of the People's Party (PP) in Spain, has made history by becoming the country's first parliamentarian with Down syndrome.

After joining the PP at the age of 18, drawn to its tradition-friendly ethos, Galcerán dedicated years to civil service. Her impactful roles included serving with the President of the Generalitat Valenciana and contributing to Asindown, a Valencian organisation supporting families with Down syndrome.

In the pivotal May 2023 Valencian regional election, Galcerán secured the 20th position on the People's Party's list. Though initially missing a seat, a serendipitous opportunity arose due to the appointment of deputy Ernesto Fernández Pardo, leading to her entry into the Corts Valenciennes on September 14, 2023.

Galcerán's historic achievement unfolded in the Spanish regional legislature, the Corts Valenciennes, potentially positioning her as the first with Down syndrome in a European regional parliament, as acknowledged by Down España.

Galcerán's journey exemplifies a decades-long commitment to advocating for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Her trailblazing follows in the footsteps of Ángela Bachiller, Spain's first city councillor, and perhaps the world’s first person with Down syndrome to hold office in 2013. The People's Party celebrated this achievement as a significant stride in breaking political barriers for those with Down's syndrome.

Despite encountering mixed reactions online, Galcerán is embracing her role with a sense of tremendous responsibility. She aspires to learn and serve Valencianos, especially those with diverse abilities. Galcerán's presence in the regional parliament aims to challenge societal prejudices, emphasising her desire to be seen beyond her disability.

As Spain's political landscape evolves to embrace diversity, Galcerán's historic role represents progress and inclusivity, fostering a positive shift in societal perceptions.
