CUET 2022 Mandatory for UG Admissions to Central Universities, 27 Domain Specific Tests Confirmed

CUET 2022 Notification Tomorrow: As per the latest update, Common University Entrance Test (CUET 2022) Official Notification will be released tomorrow – 22nd March 2022. University Grants Commission, chairman M Jagadesh Kumar made an announcement on Monday, confirming that NTA will release CUET 2022 Official Notification on Tuesday which will contain all the details about the upcoming Common Entrance Test for Central Universities.

CUET 2022 Mandatory for UG Admissions: UGC Chairman

Even as NTA is yet to release the CUET 2022 Notification, the information shared by UGC has confirmed that it would be a mandatory requirement for undergraduate admissions in central universities. Speaking to reporters, UGC Chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar also confirmed that CUET will be mandatory for the 45 central universities to adopt CUET for admission to their undergraduate courses.

This means that UGC has confirmed that CUET 2022 and not the Class 12 marks will be used to shortlist and offer admissions to undergraduate degree programmes at the central universities. This new rule will come into effect from the upcoming academic year (2022-23). However, UGC Chairperson also clarified that universities will be allowed to be either opt for CUET or adopt an independent screening mechanism for PG Admissions.

When is CUET 2022 Exam Date?

While the exact exam date for CUET 2022 is yet to be announced, media reports have hinted that NTA may hold Common University Entrance Test 2022 in July month. The entrance test is expected to be held by 1st week of July 2022 as most Board Exams would be completed by then. As per the details available so far, the CUET 2022 Exam is going to be CBT – Computer Based Test that will be held to screen candidates for admission to UG and PG Courses offered by Central Universities. The exam is expected to be held in 13 languages i.e., English, Hindi, Gujarati, Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

What are 27 Domain-specific Tests in CUET 2022?

Another key aspect of CUET 2022 Exam will be that NTA will be holding 27 Domain-Specific Tests as part of the Examination. These domains would cover 13 languages (one mandatory, 19 optional languages) as well as other domains such as accountancy, biology, biotechnology, economics, history, performing arts like dance, theatre, music, arts, and more.

Of the total 27 domains, candidates appearing for CUET 2022 will have to opt for 6 Subjects as per their choice. Of these 6, one would be a compulsory language which will be out of (Hindi, Punjabi, Assamese, Bengali, Odia, Gujarati, Marathi, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Urdu and English). Apart from this, candidates can also opt for any of the other 19 languages spanning French, German, Japanese, Russian, Bodo, Santhali, if they want to opt for the same at the degree course level.

What will be CUET 2022 Exam Structure?

In terms of the exam structure, candidates will have to appear for two shifts of the CUET Exam in a single day; in the first shift, candidates will have to l attempt the compulsory language test, two domain-specific tests, and the general test. The domain-specific test would be in accordance with the university where the candidate wishes to take admission. In the second shift, candidates will have to appear for 4 more domain-specific tests, including a language subject, if they want to take that at the course level.

What will be CUET 2022 Syllabus?

According to the information shared by UGC Chairperson, the CUET 2022 exam will be based on the Class 12 syllabus and would cover topics included in NCERT Books for different subjects and domains.

No Common Counselling for CUET 2022

While confirming that CUET 2022 will be held as a central examination to screen candidates for admission to UG and PG Courses offered by Central Universities; UGC Chairperson also noted that this doesn’t mean that it would be done at the cost of autonomy of the university’s admission process. On this topic, University Grants Commission Chairman Dr Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar said that the admission process of central universities and other universities will not change because of CUET, but they would get an additional option to consider CUET 2022 score as part of their screening process.

On the topic of common counselling for the admission process, Dr Kumar confirmed that "there will be no common counselling.” He further added that the counselling and seat allotment process would be decided by the participating universities and their affiliate colleges. He said that universities will be required to use the merit list and CUET score to admit students in different courses, but no common counselling process would be held for the same.
