With an aim to push skill development among the youth, Government has approved setting up of 3 Indian Institute of Skills (IIS). Taking another step in this diector, Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey laid the foundation stone of ISS Mumbai on Wednesday. In line with PM Modi’s Skill India campaign, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has commissioned setting up of Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) at Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Kanpur. These institutes are being developed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and in not-for-profit basis.
Foundation of ISS Mumbai
MSDE Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey laid the foundation stone of Indian Institute of Skills (IIS), Mumbai. At the ceremony, Pandey said that the idea of Skill Institutes was envisioned by PM Modi during his visit to the Vocational Education and Training Center in Singapore. Indian Institute of Skills being developed by the Government will transform his vision into reality by being a world class skill training institute.
He further added that Indian Institute of Skills will help students develop the necessary marketable skills and help build a workforce that is capable of meeting the contemporary demands of the industry. He also said that ISS will focus on technology driven innovations in new-age domains such as automation, Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, cyber technology, energy conservation etc.
Indian Institute of Skills is being developed by the Government under PPP model in partnership with Tata Education Development Trust (TEDT). The foundation stone of ISS Mumbai was laid at NSTI campus in Mumbai.
Why Indian Institute of Skills?
Indian Institute of Skills is being planned by the Government to be flagship institutes to promote skill development among the youth of the country. The institutes will follow the model of IITs i.e. Indian Institutes of Technology and will be developed all across the country as an agency offering opportunities and advanced learning facilities students to aid in their skill development. IIS will also take into account successful policies from internationally renowned existing skill institutions to design their skill development programmes.

Employment Focused Training
ISS is being developed as an institute dedicated for skill training of students in highly specialized areas. The institute will help students take up skill-based courses in technical as well as various non-technical fields after completing Class X and Class XII. The key focus of ISS would to provide practical and skill based training to the students which makes them employable and industry ready for the global market. ISS will also promote apprenticeship-embedded courses and provide certificates, diplomas and even degrees in association with renowned universities and institutes, that are accepted widely across domestic and international job market.
World Class Training Facility
Indian Institute of Skills is envisaged by the ministry as a world-class skill training centre, which will facilitate skill training of students through strong industry connect in both public and private sectors. The institutes will learn from the best practices followed by internationally renowned existing skill institutions. The courses and learning processes for ISS will be designed using modern and technology enabled training methods that use digital and augmented learning platforms.
