GU organizes workshop for school students for making solar lamps

Goa University last week organized a workshop for teaching students to make lasting solar lamps. The students who participated in the workshop belonged to the two villages adopted by Goa University.

Goa University last week organized a workshop for teaching students to make lasting solar lamps. The students who participated in the workshop belonged to the two villages adopted by Goa University. The workshop was organized by the Directorate of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) of Goa University and the students were given first-hand experience in assembling solar lamps.

Director UBA, Rajendra Gad said that the solar lamp kits were distributed to the students' has usage of 8 to 10 years with a five-year warranty. The workshop for assembling the solar lamps was conducted as part of Gandhi Jayanti. The students from the adopted villages of Goa University were selected for the workshop from the government high school, Pale-Siridao and Damodar English High School, Gudi Paroda.

The idea of using solar energy compared to other conventional means was to promote non-violent means of energy harvesting for sustainable Development goals. The workshop was conceptualized by IIT Mumbai under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan of Government of India. The international steering committee is headed by Dr. Anil Kakodkar who is also the former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India.

The students who participated in the Goa University workshop were also given lessons in water harvesting and solid waste management. About 600 students have registered for the Swachhat Bharat Student Internship programme from the University of Goa and its affiliated colleges. These students have extended their support to the activities being carried out in villages adopted by Goa University under UBA.

Under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, the activities conducted in the villages focus on solid waste management, organic farming, water harvesting, youth development, cleanliness drives, self-help groups, and artisans empowerment.

Students across the country on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti took up measures for a cleaner India by pledging against the use of single-use plastics and using cleaner and sustainable energy for the environment.
