
The students of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) schools on Wednesday took a plastic-free India pledge on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti pledging not to use single-use plastics. The schools later organized the ‘Mass Swachhta Rallies’ on the theme of ‘Make India Free from Single-Use Plastics’ in nearby schools and residential areas.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) also organized street plays, poster exhibitions, cycle rallies, and plogging drives at residential complexes, markets, and commercial spaces, parks, and gardens. NDMC Chairman Vijay Kumar Dev said that getting rid of the plastic menace which has posed a threat to life and environment is the need of the hour. He also added that the enthusiastic participation of the school students and others in the cleanliness programmes is an indication that the vision of the Prime Minister to make the country free from dust, dirt, illness and single-use plastics will be achieved.
He also took the opportunity to announce that the NDMC has decided t set up Saksham Eco Mart which is a woman’s enterprise to make them self reliant. The Saksham Eco Mart is a step towards empowering women and providing an alternative to the use of plastic.
The country celebrated the 150 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2019, by conducting various environmental drives. The students of Delhi NCR were also successful in setting up two Guinness World Records in the largest number of assembly and lighting of solar lamps and providing environmental sustainability lessons to a large number of students in one place.
