IIT Bombay Alumni Association Demands Fair, Speedy Investigation into Sahil Wakode’s Death

IIT Bombay: The IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA) has made an official statement about the untimely demise of their alumnus Sahil Wakode, appealing to the police authorities for a fair and thorough investigation of the issue. Expressing great concern about the sad incident, the alumni association pointed out the need for the investigative authorities to identify all the facts related to the incident through legitimate and fair investigations. In its appeal, the association pleaded everyone not to conduct the "trial" of the case through the media. It asked news agencies, social media users, and public individuals not to give in to any sensationalist reportage about the case until the investigations are on.

It stated that sensationalism hinders the due process of law and causes great suffering to the family members who have lost a dear one. While expressing its deepest sympathies to Sahil Wakode’s family and friends at such an hour of their great sorrow, the alumni association promised its continued support towards the well-being of the students and alumni.

What did the Officials say?

Following the unfortunate death of student Sahil Wakode, authorities from IIT Bombay and law enforcement agencies have come out with official statements. As per the first official statement, the authorities of IIT Bombay have clarified that Wakode had been found using a mobile phone and ChatGPT in the examination room. It was made clear that he had received counselling on the spot and that there would be no negative effect on his academics.

Due to protests by students on campus, an official apology has now been offered by the administration of IIT Bombay for issuing unverified information, clarifying that the actual facts are still being investigated. According to Mumbai Police and Crime Branch officials, a case has been filed against the student under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and SC/ST Act.

IIT Bombay Alumni Association: Key Highlights of the Statement

• Unbiased Investigation Demand: The alumni stressed that it was important to allow sufficient time and freedom to the police and investigation agency to know the truth behind the death case without the influence of any narrative.

• Against the Media Hypotheses: Given the problems associated with sensationalized media coverage and the spread of rumors on social networking sites, the IITBAA requested the media bodies to show some restraint in view of the legal proceeding and privacy of the mourning family.

• Support for the Family and the Institute: The body extended its condolences to the family of Sahil Wakode and reiterated its commitment towards creating awareness about mental health and administration support to students and alumni.
