Karnataka Classes 5, 8, 9 and 11 Board Exams: Karnataka High Court has rejected the notification issued by the Karnataka Department of School Education for conducting annual board exams for classes 5, 8, 9 and 11. The High Court has held the government notification as invalid days before the exams were scheduled to begin.

The ruling was delivered during a hearing of a petition filed by the Registered Unaided Private Schools’ Management Association-Karnataka and Organisation for Unaided Recognised Schools, Bengaluru.

According to the order issued schools will continue with the comprehensive evaluation mandated in the Right to Education Act. The bench mentioned that schools must follow the CCE framework to align with the principles of inclusivity and holistic development.

The state government in December 2023 announced its decision to scrap the detention policy and introduce formative summative assessment for class 5 and 8 students. The KSEAB was given the responsibility to conduct the annual exams and prepare the model question papers. The high court indicated that the circular issued by the government is invalid as it violates the provisions of RTE.

As per reports in 2023, the high court nullified the order for conducting class 5 and 8 board exams. The department however decided to expand the board exams for classes 9 and 11 along with classes 5 and 8. With opposition from students, parents and school authorities the government announced its decision to conduct board exams in 2023-24 for classes 10 and 12.
