Months of preparation and hard work has finally paid off and you are all set for your first day of college. We know you have crazy expectations and frankly, we don't blame you at all. Those high budget Karan Johar movies have set our hopes with college life very high. While we cannot promise you random flash mobs at the cafeteria or SRK-like batch mate, there are things we can guarantee will happen on the first day. Read on to know what they are:
1. Sleepless nights
It will be difficult to find sleep right before the D-Day. Your mind will be filled with thoughts of the next morning and how things will turn out to be on the first day of college. Whether you will have to face ragging, how will you like your classmates, how will your dress look on you, thoughts like these will constantly crowd your mind, forcing the sleep to evade. It would be better if you do not indulge in the over thinking game and let things turn out how they are supposed to be.
2. Dreadful self introductions
If you are someone who doesn't like talking about themselves, self introduction can prove to be a rather frightening experience. When the professor asks you to acquaint the class with your hobbies and inclinations, you will realize that you have suddenly forgotten all of them. We will advise you to be confident as that is the key to public speaking of any kind. If it is an informal setup with your seniors, you can start with your name, branch , section , hobbies , past exciting experiences and most importantly the meaning about your name. This will be a great conversation starter. If things are formal, you can only state your name and percentage in last competitive exam and why you took respective branch as brevity will be appreciated there.
3. Orientation process
Like introductions, there will be multiple rounds of orientation as well. You will be expected to attend these sessions for college, department, and every single club separately. They are usually boring but hey, you get to meet your future batch mates and potential friends at these places. A lot of friendships start at these orientations. You can probably skip some lectures but at the college orientation but for the department, we suggest you attend the entire session as it will not only enable you to learn things about your course but also give a chance to bond with people you are going to spend most of your time with.
With many tough steps taken against ragging, it is no more the threat it used to be earlier. However, there might be instances of seniors asking you to do random activities like dancing without music or address them as 'sir' or 'ma'am'. If it is not something which can hurt you physically or damages your self respect, you can give it a try and try to have some fun while doing it. However, you shouldn't be more worried about it more than you need to. There is an anti ragging squad in every college which can be asked for help in case of an emergency situation.
5. Bonding with new people
Sharing a big problem with someone is an icebreaker more effective than any other. On the first day of college you realize that other freshers are just as nervous as you are and this can be a big ground for forming a new friendship. You might not take it very seriously right now but on the last day of college these are the moments you will remember the most. This is also the time when you will talk to people you will soon stop getting along with and a few months from now, your friends will tease you for being their 'first friend in college'.
6. Finding the 'cool spots'
By 'cool spots' we mean places where you can sneak things not allowed in the campus (needless to say which). These places become the hub for people 'too cool for school' and are usually crowded by students of previous years. Your seniors will introduce you to the traditions and rules of the place and you will do the same for your juniors. These are not the areas teachers frequent so you can have all the 'fun', keeping in mind that it is still inside the college of course.
7. Relief that day one is over
And at the end of the day, you will be happy that you survived it so well. You will go back home and first thing you will do is to share your experience on Whatsapp group which has all your nearest school friends while they will share their own.
First day of college happens only once so make sure you make the most of it. Every experience counts and adds up to your repository of memories so even if it is unpleasant, it still is important to experience.
