COVID-19 is back in the news as new cases and variants are being reported in many places, including Bengaluru. With a rise in infections, including some among small children, and a recent death linked to the virus, schools are taking extra care.
In response to the recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the city and growing concerns about new variants, the Karnataka Associated Managements of Schools (KAMS) has issued a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for private schools in Bengaluru. This move follows the recent death of a city resident due to COVID-19 and aims to ensure the safety of students and staff as schools prepare to reopen.
Key Measures Outlined in the SOP
The updated SOP issued by the Karnataka Associated Managements of Schools (KAMS) includes the following health and safety measures:
Health-Based Attendance Policy:
- Students showing symptoms like fever, cough, cold, rashes, or allergies are advised to stay at home.
- Medical consultation is recommended for symptomatic students.
On-Campus Illness Protocol:
- Any student falling ill during school hours must be isolated immediately in a designated, supervised area.
- Parents must be informed without delay.
Hygiene and Sanitation:
- Regular and thorough sanitisation of classrooms, restrooms, and frequently touched surfaces.
- Availability of hand sanitisers and handwashing facilities across the school.
Health Education and Awareness:
Teachers and staff to educate students on:
- Proper handwashing techniques.
- Respiratory hygiene (covering mouth and nose while coughing/sneezing).
- Avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of illness.
Ventilation and Clean Environment:
- Ensuring classrooms and indoor spaces are well-ventilated.
- Daily cleaning and airing of classrooms.
Monitoring and Compliance:
- Staff to remain vigilant and report any suspected illness.
- Compliance with any future directives from the state health or education department.
The advisory comes amid reports of rising COVID-19 cases in Bengaluru, including infections among infants. Health officials have attributed the increase to seasonal trends and have emphasised the importance of vigilance.
As Bengaluru navigates the challenges posed by the evolving COVID-19 situation, the proactive measures taken by private schools aim to safeguard the health of students and staff. The emphasis on hygiene, awareness, and prompt response to symptoms reflects a commitment to maintaining a safe educational environment.
