    Every other student today is interested in making a career in Engineering or Medicine. Moreover, students are aware enough of different specialisations and courses in engineering domain, however, in case of a career in medicine, they are aware of prominent options only such as cardiologist, neurosurgeon, physician, nursing, dentists etc. In this article, we have listed out different career options in medicine domain, medical courses as well as eligibility and career prospects.

    Course options in medicine after Class 12 for science stream students –

    1. Health Care and Information Management:

    The job of a Health Information Manager is to analyse and interpret health data, collect data about patients from hospitals, record and maintain the data, as well as maintain privacy and security of their data.

    • Career prospect – The demand for information managers in the healthcare industry is being highlighted now as the demand is really high in medical or biological informatics, nursing informatics, public health sector as well as for the development of health policies and technology in this sector.
    • Eligibility – Students who have completed their               Class 12th with science stream i.e. they must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics And Biology or just PCB from state or national recognised educational board are eligible for admissions to the courses in this field.

    As the technology has advanced and it’s been decades now that it is implemented in hospitals. MRIT is the complete use of technique/machinery for purpose of designing images of patients to analyse their body for diseases to diagnose the exact reason.

    • Career prospects – Radiology has become crucial for the healthcare industry as before prescribing medicines or starting treatment of any patients, every medical specialist recommend and mandate MRI scan, X-Ray, CT Scan, Ultrasound etc. Therefore, a career in Medical Radiology is most promising for medical aspirants.  
    • Eligibility – Students must have studied PCMB or PCB in their class 10+2 qualifying examination along with English as a compulsory subject.

    B. Sc in Medical Imaging Technology, B.Sc. in Radiography, B. Sc in MRIT –Students will be studying this specialisation for 8 semesters with an internship in the duration of courses only.

    3. Physiotherapy or Physical Therapy:

    A Physiotherapist works toward prevention of health issues by using mechanical and manual therapy on the patients. They also research towards improvements of therapies on patients for their long-term benefits.   

    • Career prospects – The physiotherapists are required in rehabilitation centres, hospitals, medical fitness centres, as well as at sports centres as a therapist for athletes.
    • Eligibility – Students who have completed their 10+2 in science stream from state or national recognised board.
    • Courses available:

    Bachelor of Physiotherapy – The students would be required to study physiotherapy for 4 years and also they will be undergoing internship in the duration of course only.

    4. Radiotherapy:

    It deals with the study of radiation oncology for treatment of Cancer disease. A radiotherapist works with cancer patients, prescribes medicines, therapy, reviews their test results as well as follow-ups with patients to consult prevention therapies to avoid re-occurrence of the disease.

    • Career prospects – Every cancer institute as well as research institutes require radiotherapist.
    • Eligibility – Students who have studied 10+2 with science stream from state recognised or nationally recognised education board.

    B.Sc in Radiotherapy Technology (RTT) – the course duration is 4 years with internships.

    5. Nutritionist & Dietitians:

    A nutritionist or dietitian is an expert who works towards consultation and regulating healthy diets for individuals. They also work with hospitals to plan and monitor diet charts of patients as required.

    • Career prospects – They are required with every healthcare institute as well as sports and fitness centres to plan and monitor diets of their clients. They also do research in the field for improving public health welfare.
    • Eligibility – Students must have studied class 10+2 with science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

    B.Sc Nutrition & Dietetics, BSc Home Science – Students are required to study this course for 3 years duration.

    6. Audiology & Speech/Language Pathology:

    A speech or language pathologist or audiologist works towards treatment of speech, language, vocal issues in patients.

    • Eligibility – Students must have studied class 10+2 with science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Mathematics/Computer Science/Statistics.

    Bachelor of Science in Audiology, Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Therapy (BASL) – Students are required to study this specialisation for 4 years along with a 1-year internship in the course duration only.

    7. Dialysis Therapy Technology:

    A DTT plans therapy and prescribes medicines, also performs various dialysis on the patient as well as maintains a record of their medical treatment.

    • Career prospects – They work with the senior technologist in health care institutes to carefully monitor and supervise patients on dialysis.
    • Eligibility – Students must have studied class 10+2 with science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
    • Courses available:

    Bachelor of Science in Dialysis Therapy – students can study a 3-year or 4-year course in dialysis therapy.

    8. Optometrist:

    • Career prospects – They work with government hospitals, eye care specialist as well as non-governmental organisations for public health welfare.
    • Eligibility – Students must have studied class 10+2 with science subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
    • Courses available:

    Bachelor of Science in Optometry – The students will be required to study this course for 4 years.
