DU Asked to Shutdown Evening Law Colleges by the Bar Council

Delhi University has been asked to shutdown colleges that offer law courses in the evening shift by the Bar Council of India. They have pointed out that these programs do not ensure proper quality of legal education and should be stopped with immediate effect.

The Bar Council of India issued a communication to Delhi University in which it said, “Taking into account that proper quality of legal education cannot be ensured if classes are run during evening and night hours, the Bar Council of India has taken a policy decision to dispense with the evening colleges. Two of your law colleges are offering classes beyond 9 pm. which is in violation of the BCI directive. Whatever may have been the reason for running these colleges, the same cannot be permitted henceforth.”

It also asked Delhi University to make arrangements and notify its students that there will be no admissions in the evening classes for law stream, from the next academic year onwards. BCI in 2014 decided to derecognize DU’s law course after its failure in timely extension of the three centres for law namely Campus Law Centre, Law Centre-I and Law Centre- II. The council further granted extension for the 2014-15 session, after the proposal from DU to shift the law stream to a new building which had adequate space. However, during the last inspection, the BCI panel found that there are violations, illegalities and other un-uniformity present in running the faculty. In response to this report the BCI has issued a show-cause notice to DU to explain their illegalities in terms of infrastructure, faculty, student strength and permissible land for study operations.
