Appointment of Harvard Law School Professor Ashish Nanda, as the new director of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has fascinated foreign universities faculty members to associate with this top-notch and leading B-school of India.
Other than Professor Ashish Nanda, seven new faculty appointments have been made starting from January to September 2013, amongst which three have come from various overseas universities. The institute appear to be a favoured destination for young faculty members, arriving from the universities of USA and other nations.
The recently appointed faculty members comprise of Professor Naman Desai from Dixon School of Accounting, University of Central Florida, Professor Ramanathan Subramaniam from the University of Kansas and Prof Pavan Mamidi from the Harvard Law School, recruited between May and August.
While, other recruits are Professor Kartik Sriram, who happens to have completed a Fellow Programme in Management from IIM Bangalore, Professor Vishal Gupta(IIM Calcutta), Professor Sharon Barnhardt who has completed her Ph.D from Harvard University and Professor Shruti Sharma who has a Ph.D from the University of California.
The faculty strength as on September 27, 2013, at IIM-A is 91. However, 120 is the sanctioned limit of faculty members. Alongside, prominence on better compensation structure is being laid as the institute is expecting to attract more of global talent.
A senior faculty member of IIM-A told, "Prof Nanda's appointment has encouraged more world class talent to teach at IIM-A, be it taking up short term assignments or on a permanent basis. We are already seeing a change in the recruitment pattern,".
Currently, IIM-A has one of the optimal staff in the world. More than half the faculty members hold Ph.Ds from outstanding foreign universities. Along with fellowship, they also boast prior experience at renowned b-schools, including London Business School, the McGill University, the Tulane University, the University of Texas at Austin, and University of Massachusetts at Amherst etc.
