How Should a Non-Maths Background Student Prepare for the Maths Portion of CSAT?

Just by the name of Maths, non-maths background students need not to worry. Questions are generally on the School standard level, and its all General and Basic in nature. You need not to do any special study on Maths, neither you need to have a Maths background to solve CSAT Maths.

A number of questions are asked from the Maths Section in the UPSC Prelims Exam. Till 2010, Maths questions used to be asked in the Prelims GS paper. From 2011 Prelims, the Maths questions will be in the Paper II of the Prelims i.e. in the CSAT paper. Earlier Maths used to be asked in the Mental Ability portion of the GS paper. In 2011, the Maths portion has been kept in the CSAT paper. So, just by the name of Maths, non-maths background students need not to worry. There will be the same kind of Maths questions that used to be asked in the Traditional Prelims GS paper, its all General and Basic in nature.

By the Maths questions in the CSAT, your basic Ability to Accuracy and calculation will be judged. For this you need not do any special study on Maths, neither you need to have a Maths background. Questions are generally on the School standard level. You need to polish up your School level Numeracy, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry. Studying and practicing the NCERT school books from class 6 to class 10 is very helpful. To answer the Maths questions that will be asked in the CSAT, your basics on Maths should be fair enough.

Questions will be on Percentage, Average, Age, Time and Work, Time and Distance Profit and Loss and Probability etc. Practice will make you solve the questions quickly and accurately. Take the Previous years GS Mental Ability questions on Maths and practice them at home. This will improve your efficiency in solving a Maths problem.

Certain things like the Square of the numbers from 1 to 50, Square root of the numbers till 10, General Multiplication Tables till 20 etc. are to be remembered on tips to be quick in Exams.

Above and all while solving the Maths questions you really need to have a relaxed mind. Put your full concentration while solving Maths problems to avoid mistakes. If you make a mistake at one step of the Maths problem, the whole outcome would come wrong. So, be patient, relaxed and attentive while doing Maths.
