IBPS PO Exam: English Language: Question Paper Analysis

Probationary Officer Common Written Examination contains a paper in English Language along with four other papers namely General Awareness, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and Computer Knowledge. The total number of question in the written examinations remains 200 containing a total of 200 marks. In order to pass the written examinations the candidates need to score the cut off marks set by the exam conducting authority IBPS (Indian Banking Personnel Selection) based on the evaluation of the papers of the candidates. The questions asked in this paper deals majorly with the basic English language and candidates who opt for the examinations must brush their tense, grammar and reading skills at the outset. There are questions dealing with reconstruction of sentences that needs a clear knowledge of sentence formation and active and passive sentences. The candidates who are emanated with exceptional vocabulary skills find it rather easy to crack the examination.

Description of the Questions asked in the Paper

  • The question paper contains questions related to Spotting common errors and finding mis-spelt words, checking the vocabulary and word stock of the candidates. The number of such questions varies from 3 to 5.
  • There is a drill in the question paper dealing with re-ordering of sentences. The candidates need to fix the jumbled order of sentences to make it a proper one. This tests the candidate’s ability to form proper sentences.
  • Questions related to idioms and phrases, choosing appropriate fillers and synonyms and antonyms are common in this paper. These questions are asked to check your basic grammatical skills and your understanding of the language.
  • The most vital part of this paper consists of 8 to 15 questions from a long paragraph to check the reading comprehension of the candidates. The Paragraph contains useful information which needs to get answered later after finishing the same. There are questions related to one word substitutions, finding synonymous of certain words in the passage and re-arranging sentence and passages in the paragraph.
