IELTS Full Form: The full form of IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It is an English language proficiency test developed and run by IDP Education in partnership with Cambridge Assessment English and the British Council. It is an internationally recognised test for individuals who want to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. This test has been taken by approximately 3 million people annually.

What are Different Types of IELTS Tests?

The IELTS exam is broadly divided into two types, i.e., academic and general training. Both exam test the four fundamental language skills, such as listening, reading, writing and speaking, and the content and purpose of both exams are different

IELTS Academic

The IELTS academic is conducted for those who seek higher education opportunities. It evaluates individuals English language proficiency and determines the suitability of an academic setting. The IELTS academic test assesses the grasp of academic language and determines whether the individual is prepared for commencing training or studying in English. 

IELTS General Training

The IELTS general training focusses on the everyday English language, which is suited for work, immigration or training programs. This test includes workplace and social situations, comprehensively evaluating your language abilities in real-life contexts. 

What is the eligibility criteria for the IELTS exam?

The only requirement for taking the IELTS exam across the world and in India is that the individual must be at least 16 years of age. Individuals who are 16 or older are eligible to sit in any of the IELTS exams regardless of their gender, nationality or background. 

How Is the IELTS Exam Conducted?

The IELTS test assesses individuals English language proficiency in four skill sets: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

Listening Section

This section includes four recordings of native English speakers, where you need to answer 40 questions. The test section lasts about 30 minutes, including 10 minutes at the end, to transfer answers to the answer sheet

Tips:

  • Practice active listening.
  • Focus on keywords and phrases.
  • Manage your time effectively, as you only get one chance to listen.

Reading Section

This section evaluates individuals ability to comprehend a text's overall meaning, main concepts, and specific details. Academic candidates will get more complex texts, while general training candidates will handle simpler, more practical content.

Writing Section

The writing section assesses an individual's proficiency in organising ideas and writing responses using a diverse range of vocabulary and grammar with precision and accuracy. The IELTS Academic Writing test covers topics appropriate for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The IELTS General Training section includes questions from books, magazines,  notices, company handbooks, etc.

Speaking Section

The speaking section evaluates an individual's ability for effective communication and information about everyday topics and common experiences. It is an in-person interview, which lasts about 11–14 minutes. Here, individuals will be evaluated on fluency, grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

IELTS Score Band

The IELTS score is defined on a 9-band score, with 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest. Each section is graded individually, i.e., listening, reading, writing, and speaking, and the final score is an average of these four sections. 

Band 9: Expert user.

Band 6: Competent user.

Band 5: Modest user.
