PhD Standards to be Mitigated in Calicut University

Jan 15, 2015 03:04 IST

Plagiarism charges against PhD theses submitted in the Calicut University in the year 2006 has not change its ways which is now to mitigate the PhD standards.

The regulations which would be put forward in the academic council are in violation of the University Grants Commission regulations for research. The agenda is to put a proposal of increasing the number to ten seats by the research guide at a time however; the UGC specifies that there should not be more than eight students under a guide. The university has also proposed allowing temporarily-affiliated self-financing colleges as research centres, granting guide-ship to teachers/professionals employed in self-financing institutions and allowing retired guides for guide-ship.

The number of PhD scholars at the university had gone up by 300%, from 236 in 2011 to over 700 now, following relaxation of norms earlier.
