India’s national sporting game is hockey. But in reality, there’s hardly anyone who is aware of the realities of the hockey game. It has just become a cramming line, in the books of general knowledge that hockey is our national sport. No-one in our country is fully aware of the rules of the games, the national hockey players and the match schedules held.

It’s high time that we think of changing our national game from hockey to cricket. Cricket is not just a sport, but a religion in India. It is closely followed by the interest in football, tennis and other sporting activity.  If we are to measure the choice of sporting activity by the popularity it is to receive, we may observe that cricket resides as the most beloved sports among the millions of its fans across the world. It should be there nation’s choice to elect the national sports of India and it’s high time that we change it from hockey to cricket. There are various reasons to believe why we must elect cricket over hockey as our national sports.

• The very idea of a game is to inspire a nation to play good sports. It instills the fundamental virtues of tasting the glory of success, taking failure as a part of life. Cricket is one such sport, which communicates effectively with the majority of people in India. It is popular and it evokes the feeling of national sentiments amongst the youth.

• Our cricket team has represented the world in various places. It won the world cup in 2011.This was a victorious moment for all the Indians across the world. They went out in the streets, united together, singing slogans and celebrating this momentous occasion which made them feel proud to be Indians.

• Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian cricketer, has set the record of having made one hundred international centuries, the first batsman to score a double century in a one day international. This can be concluded that Indian cricketers through their hard work, dedication and immense potential have given a lot to India and the world.

Popularity is not just the single most factor that makes cricket to be a far more important than other sports. Our Indian cricket team has contributed to the Indian economy, brought the success of IPL to India. It’s high time that we give them the due recognition and make it our national sports.
