UGC Guidelines on FYUP Research Internships: The University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced a research internship for the fourth-year students of the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). This internship will help the students understand the world of work and give them much-required exposure to emerging technologies along with other benefits.

As per the UGC, “An internship is gaining first-hand experience by an individual besides comprehending the way of working in an organisation, leading to improve the skill aptitude for a specific job or job role and building research capabilities with learning opportunities. Internships should be organised that benefit the research intern as well as the internship providing organisation”.

FYUP Research Internship Categories

The employability of graduates can be improved by developing practical experience and exposure with the required right kind of attitude for the workplace.  The internship is one of the important apparatuses that help in improving these employability skills and can help in generating competency, capability, professional working skills, expertise, and confidence among the students for employability and developing interest/passion for research. The interns can understand the application of theory in the workplace.

The undergraduate internships would be classified into two types:

(i). Internship for enhancing the employability

(ii). Internship for developing the research aptitude

FYUP Research Internship Structure

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are required to play an important role in arranging internships for their students by creating a structured robust mechanism for internship programmes under their Research and Development (R&D) Cell. Each HEI should have a Nodal Officer who will be nominated as a member for the organisation and execution of internship opportunities in the institution.

Apart from this, an internship supervisor will be nominated by the institution for monitoring, supervising, and evaluating the student during the internship duration.

FYUP Research Internship Offering

The students, who get research internships in any industry in the fourth year of their undergraduate programme, will get a stipend, insurance and academic credits. The student's scores will be collected in the 'Academic Bank of Credit' implemented under the NEP. Also, the internship project will be linked to student's skill development courses.
