UGC’s Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for SC/ ST Candidates 2012-13

The Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship (RGNF) Scheme for SC and ST is formulated and funded by Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and Ministry of Tribal Affairs. The scheme is open to candidates who belong to SC & ST who wish to pursue higher studies such as regular and full time MPhil and PhD degrees in Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Engineering & Technology.

University Grants Commission (UGC) invites application from eligible SC/ ST candidates for this fellowship which will cover all Universities/ Institutions recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & section 3 of the UGC Act. However candidates should note that this fellowship would be available to only those SC/ST candidates who desire to pursue research without JRF of UGC-NET or UGC-CSIR NET.

  • Scheduled Caste (SC) Candidates: 2000
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST) Candidates: 667

  • Opening date for online submission of application: 27 November 2012
  • Closing date for online submission of application: 26 December 2012


The scheme has been initiated keeping in view the social background of the candidates for the deprived section of the society and to provide them opportunity to undertake advanced studies and research.

Eligibility Criteria

SC/ST Candidates who have passed the Post Graduate examination in concerned subject.

About Scholarship

The tenure of award is initially for two years however it can be extended further for a period of 3 years under the enhanced emoluments of RGNSRF after evaluation is done by a Committee before expiry of initial 2 years. The committee will comprise of Head of the Department, Supervisor and one outside subject expert to be constituted by the concerned Department of the University/Institution/College.

Fellowship Subjects

Rs 16000 per month for initial 2 years
Rs 18000 per month for remaining tenure



Contingency A

Rs 10000 per annum for initial 2 years
Rs 20500 per annum for remaining tenure

Humanities & Social Sciences

Contingency B

Rs 12000 per annum for initial 2 years
Rs 20500 per annum for remaining tenure

Sciences, Engineering & Technology


Departmental Assistance

Rs 3000 per annum student to the host institution for providing infrastructure

Escorts/Reader assistance

Rs 2000 per month in cases of physically handicapped & blind candidates

Selection Procedure: The selections will be based on the basis of merit. The candidate however needs to get himself/herself registered for M Phil/ PhD at the first available prospect. However the candidate should not delay it beyond a period of two years from the receipt of award letter as it is not extendable. The actual payment of fellowship will be made with effect from the date of approval of fellowship or date of joining whichever is later.
