A blazing sun, some fanning dust and hundreds of excited participants defined the 4-day spectacular event BAJA SAE INDIA, the largest motorsport gathering in the world.

BAJA, a Desert of Mexico's California Peninsula, was the setting of this event, defying the ruthless conditions of its ecosystem.

Baja SAE INDIA is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers INDIA (SAE INDIA). Teams of students from various universities designed and built off-road buggies to withstand the harshest elements of a rough terrain. Each year as many as 110 Baja cars from around the world enter the event held in India. These teams come from places including US, Brazil, South Africa and Korea.

Venturing into unchartered territory of organising a mega-event of this scale, the Automotive research Association of India (ARAI) and NATRIP lend a helping hand through an earmarked zone at its upcoming proving grounds – NATRAX Facility, situated at Pithampur, Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Team Kshatriya from VIT University, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, was one of the first teams that participated in BAJA SAE INDIA series since its inception. Formed in the year 2006 by a group of undergraduate students of the esteemed university, the team has been rising all these years unperturbed and now stands on the pinnacle of its rich history. It was ranked 3rd consecutively this time at the mega motorsport event held at NATRAX Facility at Indore, BAJA SAE INDIA 2015.

The team starts their designing phase in early April, making a unique buggy each year which is better in every aspect compared to the previous ones. This is followed by market surveys, manufacturing phase involving patience, determination and perseverance. The last phase concludes with a month-long testing of the vehicle to check its designed parameters and overall performance to prepare for the ultimate BAJA test at the event.

The entire competition is divided into two stages, Virtual BAJA and the Main Event with the Virtual Round comprising of above 300 teams from India and across the world. Here, the best teams are sorted out on the basis of design, practical ability and innovations.

The main event comprises of both Static and Dynamic Events awarded with points on the basis of judgement and performance. The static event comprises of Technical Inspection to verify whether the vehicle stands according to the rulebook specifications. This is done to ensure safety and fare competition among all the teams for Design Evaluation, Cost Evaluation and the Sales and Marketing Presentation.

The Dynamic event comprises of the Acceleration test, Hill Climb and Manoeuvrability event. These are specially designed to check steering systems and the driver’s ability followed by Suspension and Traction test which comprises of rock crawls, table tops and wooden logs with variable terrain to push the vehicle dynamics to its extreme limits. All these checks finally leads to the ultimate challenge on the final day. This is a four-hour "Endurance Race" on a specially designed track featuring thrilling difficulties like Muddy Bowl, Splash-a-Dash, Kaala Pani, Gitch Bridge and many more which drags the best out of the vehicle, driver and the team members reflecting their zeal and hard work.

The event concludes with an award ceremony which every team aims to achieve after a year-long preparations and efforts. Team Kshatriya has finished consistently rising through their ranks every year. Talking about their achievement, the team’s Transmission Engineer, Mr. Sayan Karmakar said," We always worked hard keeping in mind a podium finish. The never ending nights of toil and the memorable team discussions kept motivating us. Our sole belief was that winning isn't getting ahead of others, it's getting ahead of yourself. Perhaps this is why we are standing here today with the trophy among u. We will continue to improve and make our university proud."

The team has 25 members from the first, second and third year. As quoted by the Team Captain, Mr. Nasit Malay R, "The team is readied every year on the basis of written tests comprising both technical and aptitude questions. This is followed by Personal Interviews and Individual Task Rounds. We make sure we get the best out of them and only then we handpick the ones who stand to take the legacy ahead. The role of the seniors is of great importance. They guide the new team with the help of their own experience and knowledge. This is what defines the team."

Dr. G. Viswanathan, Chancellor congratulated the team and said that VIT teams have been winning several global competitions not only this but several others. This is due to the combination of student’s interest and our encouragement, both financially and motivationally.

So in future one would need not be surprised if VIT teams win all global level competitions on a daily basis.
