Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi presented the 25th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration to music composer A R Rahman and Ramkrishna Mission Ashram, Narainpur of Chhattisgarh jointly in New Delhi on 31 October 2010. The Ramkrishna Mission Ashram in Narainpur in Bastar region of Chhattisgarh was selected for the award for its commendable work among the Pahadi Madia tribals. Rahman who won the Oscars for Jai Ho was honoured for bringing together people of all ages and all lands on the uniform platform of melody, rhythm and song.
The Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration initiated in 1985 is the prestigious award accorded by the Indian National Congress. The award is given to recognise distinguished persons/institutions for promoting national integration and understanding and fellowship amongst religious groups, communities, ethnic groups, cultures, languages and traditions of India and the strengthening, through thought and action of the nation's sense of solidarity.
