98% of ₹2,000 Notes Returned: Still a Chance to Deposit Rs 2,000 Notes in Banks

Rs 2,000 Banknotes: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Monday that 98.08% of ₹2,000 notes have been returned to banks. On May 19, 2023, ₹3.56 lakh crore worth of these notes were in circulation, but this has now dropped to ₹6,839 crore.

According to the Reserve Bank on Monday, just Rs 6,839 crore worth of Rs 2,000 banknotes remain in circulation, with 98.08 percent of the notes having been returned to the banking system.

As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) declaration on May 19, 2023, banknotes having a denomination of Rs 2,000 will no longer be in circulation in the Indian market.

98% ₹2,000 notes returned:

By the end of business on November 29, 2024, the total value of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation had dropped from Rs 3.56 trillion at the end of business on May 19, 2023, to Rs 6,839 crore, according to the RBI.

"Thus, 98.08 percent of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, has since been returned," RBI stated in an official statement. 

Where can the ₹2,000 Notes be Exchanged?

All bank branches offered the option to deposit and/or exchange the Rs 2,000 banknotes till October 7, 2023. However, one can exchange or deposit their 2,000 note at all the 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank of India. 

Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram are the 19 RBI offices that deposit and exchange banknotes.

Send Rs 2,000 Notes Via Post Office

Additionally, people can send Rs 2,000 banknotes to any RBI issuing office via India Post from any post office in the nation to have them credited to their bank accounts.

The 2,000 rupee notes are still accepted as legal money.
