A team of Scientists, from the University of Buffalo, in the third week of February 2011 synthesized a new kind of nanotechnology to make drinking water safer. The Scientists, working with a specific block co-polymer, developed a new kind of nanomembrane which contains pores about 55 nanometres wide. It would be large enough for water molecules to pass through, but would be too small for bacteria. Both water molecules and bugs are so small in size that they are measured by the nanometer. However, the two actually differ greatly at the microscopic level. A single water molecule is less than a nanometre in size while some of the bugs are 200 nanometres in size.
