Assam Govt. Declared Introduction of Social Audit of Assam’s Panchayats Twice A Year

India Current Affairs 2011. Assam Government declared to introduce social audit of Assam’s over two thousand panchayats twice a year.

On 14 June 2011, the Assam Government declared to introduce social audit of Assam’s over two thousand panchayats two times a year. In the declaration, the audit was made mandatory in the month of April and October every year. This step was taken by the Assam Government to ensure transparency and check corruption in Panchayat Raj Institutions.

Social audit is considered as a tool through which Government Departments can plan, manage and measure their functions, efficiency and consequences.

After this, the Assam Government also assured of starting the process for providing biometric Smart Cards to the Job Card holders of Assam under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The Government’s further plan included distribution of tractors and power tillers among around one lakh 37 thousand unemployed educated youths of Assam, who could take up farming as a means of livelihood. These youths are planned to be provided vocational training, so that they curb unemployment problem in Assam. A fresh census of Below Poverty Line (BPL) card holders in Assam was also in the list of Assam Governments declaration.
