China surpassed US in the global supercomputing race as its Supercomputer Tianhe-1A ranked fastest in the world. Chinese Supercomputer Tianhe-1A which means Milky Way is capable of 2.67 quadrillions of computing operations per second.
Chinese Supercomputer Tianhe-1A was ranked fastest in the world according to the report released by Top 500 on 28 October 2010. Tianhe-1A overtook Cray XT5 Jaguar System of US which held the tag of fastest Super Computer earlier. Tianhe-1A can perform 2.67 quadrillions of computing operations per second while Jaguar performs at 1.75 qaudrillions per second which is 92 percent slower than the Tianhe-1A.
The third place in the list released by Top 500 also went to a Chinese Super Computer named Nebulae installed in the National Supercomputing Centre in Schenzen.
The TOP500 list is compiled twice a year by researchers at the University of Mannheim, Germany; the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the DOE’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Supercomputer is used first in 1960s and it is used by various colleges and companies to conduct various research programmes. Supercomputer is used in the field of Quantum Mechanics besides studying climate change and carrying out military operations. Super computer is also used in weather forecast, molecular studies, polymer research, chemical composition and wind tunnel research. Moreover, Supercomputer is used in mathematical problems and protein-folding techniques.
