According to a study titled Screening of Currency in Circulation for bacterial contamination published in the latest edition of Current Science found that currency notes and coins carry several kinds of bacteria of which three species are highly infectious. Researchers, who did the study, collected 25 samples of currency notes and coins using a random sampling technique.The study was published in the third week of March 2011.
The study showed that 100 percent of the currency notes and 96 percent of the coins were found to be contaminated with Bacterial species. Out of these, three pathogenic species Klebsiella spp, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were discovered to be responsible for several gastric and respiratory diseases.
