Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 5, 2022 canceled his scheduled visit to Punjab's Ferozepur to lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects. As per media reports, PM Modi had landed in Bathinda from where he was to go to National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala by helicopter. He failed to reach the destination due to blockage by protestors in a major lapse of security and it was decided to turn back to the Bathinda airport.

As per the revised home isolation guidelines 2022, patients under home isolation with mild or asymptomatic Covid-19 can end their isolation after 7 days have passed from testing positive and no fever for 3 successive days.

Dr. Alka Mittal took additional charge as the Interim Chairperson and Managing Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on January 4, 2022. She has become the first woman to hold the post. She succeeds Subhash Kumar who retired on December 31.

The State Bank of India decided on January 4, 2022 to enhance the free IMPS online transactions limit to Rs 5 lakh from earlier Rs 2 lakh to encourage customers to adopt digital banking. SBI will not levy any service charge on Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) transactions up to Rs 5 lakh done through Internet banking or Mobile Banking.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has been appointed as a member of Britain's top royal order- Order of the Garter along with the Duchess of Cornwall and Baroness Amos. The Order of the Garter is England's oldest and most senior order of chivalry. The former prime minister will now be known as 'Sir Tony'. The appointments are made based on the personal choice of the Queen.

Bangladesh created history on January 5, 2022 by beating current World Test Champions New Zealand by 8 wickets in their first test at Bay Oval in New Zealand. This is Bangladesh's first win against New Zealand in New Zealand in any format and first Test win over a top-five ICC-ranked team away from home. The historic win has helped Bangladesh jump to the 5th rank on the ICC World Test Championship Points Table 2021-2023.

Three-time Olympic triple jump champion and former world record-holder Viktor Saneyev passed away at the age of 76. The World Athletics shared the sad news on January 2, 2022. Born in Georgia, Viktor had won Olympic gold in three consecutive games representing the Soviet Union, in 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games, 1972 Munich Olympics and 1976 Montreal Olympics. He won a silver in the Olympics four years later in Moscow.
