In an important decision, the Union Home Minister has announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The central government has decided to create five new districts in Ladakh namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang. At present there are only two districts in Ladakh - Leh and Kargil. Both districts have their own autonomous district councils which govern them. After the formation of new districts, Ladakh will have a total of seven districts.

Maharashtra has become the first state to offer Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) to its employees. The move by the Eknath Shinde-led government comes a day after the Centre announced UPS for employees who joined the service after January 1, 2004. Earlier, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that this decision would benefit 23 lakh central government employees.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the continuation of three umbrella schemes under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) merged into an integrated Central Sector Scheme called 'Vigyan Dhara'. The primary objective of the 'Science Stream' is to promote science and technology capacity building, research, innovation and technology development.

Tamil Nadu-based startup Space Zone India launched India's first reusable hybrid rocket, mission RHUMI-2024, on a mobile platform from the TTDC grounds at Thiruvidandhai, East Coast Road, Chennai. The rocket has been developed by Chennai-based startup Space Zone India in collaboration with Martin Group.

Former cricketer and chief selector Farooq Ahmed has replaced Nazmul Hasan Papon as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The current president had resigned in the wake of political unrest in the country.  The BCB held an emergency meeting during which 58-year-old Ahmed was selected.

India recently won the silver medal in the Maruhaba Cup, a prestigious team event, at the Asian Surfing Championship 2024 held at Thulusdhoo, Maldives. The Indian team of Kamali P, Ajeesh Ali, Srikanth D and Sanjay Selvamani performed impressively throughout the competition. However, in the final, Japan won the gold medal with a dominant score of 58.40.
