Delhi High Court on 6 October 2012 dismissed the PIL (Public Interest Litigation) that challenged the decision of the President for appointment of Saryu V. Doshi as the member of the three member committee constituted for short listing the name of three people to head Lalit Kala Akademi.
The High Court Bench of Chief Justice D. Murugesan and Justice Rajiv Sahai Endlaw dismissed the plea stating that where the President is the ultimate decision maker in such cases his decision can only be challenged if the nominee is not fit for nomination in any of such committees on any ground. The PIL was filed by an artiste named Prasanta Kalita, who had been working with the academy for past 10 years.
The major objective and role of the three member committee constituted is to finalise the names of three candidates in alphabetical order and submit it to the President. For the President is responsible for selecting the one name out of those to be the next Chairperson of the Akademi and will be a successor of the retiring Chairperson Ashok Vajpayee.
