Fadnavis announces formation of committee to look into farmers demands

The panel, headed by senior BJP minister Chandrakant Patil, will submit its report to the state government after holding discussions with farmers' leaders.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on 10 June 2017 announced the formation of a six-member high powered committee. The constituted committee will look into various demands of farmers, including a loan waiver.

The panel was asked to submit its report to the state government after holding discussions with farmers' leaders. The committee will hold discussions with farmers' leaders and submit a proposal to the state government.

Reports suggest that the panel will be headed by senior BJP minister Chandrakant Patil.

The panel also comprises of senior Shiv Sena minister Diwakar Raote, Agriculture Minister Pandurang Fundkar, Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, Cooperation Minister Subhash Deshmukh and Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan.

Background

Farmers from a village in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra went on a strike on 1 June 2017 and this strike was followed by many farmers groups in other parts of the state. During the strike, the farmers tried to suspend vegetable and milk supply to Mumbai.
