Prof. Vidya Prakash Dutt, eminent China scholar and Indian foreign policy expert and former acting Vice Chancellor of the Delhi University died on 26 April 2011. Dutt is credited with setting up what is now the Department of East Asian Studies at Delhi University.
Prof. Vidya Prakash Dutt was the India’s first known Sinologist. He was also instrumental in setting up the department of Chinese and Japanese Studies in the Delhi University in 1964. The department of Chinese and Japanese Studies in the Delhi University went on to become the Department of East Asian Studies.
Dutt was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1976 and was the founder of the National Forum of Teachers (NFT). Prof. Dutt authored many books and wrote in well-known international journals on varied topics.
He was always an active member of several high-level academic committees of the University Grants Commission and of various universities and institutes. He was a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses.
