He was arrested under anti-terrorism laws for allegedly ordering the arrest of Criminal Court judge in 2012, which triggered violence in Maldives.

Former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed was arrested on 22 February 2015 in Male. He was arrested under anti-terrorism laws after a court said that he might flee the country to avoid hearings on terrorism charges.

He is facing criminal charges over his order to arrest a Criminal Court judge Abdulla Mohamed in January 2012.

Although his original charges were withdrawn by the prosecutor-general in third week of February 2015, however, later an arrest warrant was issued under new charges of terrorism relating to the same incident of the arrest of the judge.

Nasheed is a leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and was the first democratically elected President of Maldives. He stepped down as the President of Maldives in 2012.
