Muslim brotherhood’s the Freedom and Justice Party won 235 seats in the Egypt Parliamentary elections. The election results were declared on 21 January 2012 by the High election committee. Elections were held on 498 seats. The Al-Nour Party came second with 125 seats. The liberal Wafd party came in third and the Egyptian Bloc coalition came in fourth. The complex election process was carried out in three rounds of voting that began in November 2011 and wrapped up in January 2012. The first session of Egypt parliament was called on 23 January 2012. The total strength of parliament is 508.
Elections for parliament's upper house are scheduled to be held in February 2012. The two-chambers will then elect a 100-member body to draft a new constitution. A new president is likely to be elected by June 2012.
The elections were the first since the overthrow of former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. It is important to note that two-thirds of the seats in the new lower house of Egypt Parliament are allocated to registered parties and the remaining won by individual candidates. The ruling military council has the power to nominate 10 other members. Freedom and Justice party is the political wing of Muslim Brotherhood.
