Hafiz Saeed, the chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) and co-founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba has been placed under house arrest along with four others by Pakistani authorities.

The order of detention was issued by Punjab Province’s Interior Ministry under Anti-Terrorism Act in accordance with a directive issued by Pakistan’s Interior Ministry on 27 January 2017.

In the directive, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry had stated that the government had reasons to believe that JuD is engaged in activities that could pose a threat to peace and security and violate Pakistan’s obligations towards the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution No 1267.

The directive further ordered the Punjab government to put JuD under Watch List. A similar order was also issued for Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) for a period of 6 months, which may be extended later.
