During the seventh International Conference on Environmental Crime organised from 13-17 September 2010, India was selected for the post of secretary in the Wildlife Crime Working Group of the Interpol for the first time. Rina Mitra, Additional Director Wildlife Crime Control Bureau will represent India in the post. India will continue to hold the position for a period of four years. UK was elected as Chair. The Wildlife Crime Working Group comprises all the 188 member countries of Interpol. The Group works under the framework of Environmental Crime Committee that is responsible for identifying emerging patterns as well as trends in the field of environmental crime enforcement. The group meets annually to discuss wildlife crime and identify trends in illegal trade of flora and fauna. The group’s focus is on reducing wildlife crime like the poaching, trafficking, or possessing legally protected flora and fauna in member countries. The members of the group elect respectively a chairperson, vice-chairperson, secretary and treasurer for four years.
